Hey Jay,

Thanks for chiming in on this distance running is absolutely a way to test your mental and emotional toughness!!! Also I can echo your methods of coaxing yourself to go just a little farther and then when you get there you find that it was not as bad as you thought.

Thanks again you brought up some great points.

You raise a lot of great points about toughness, and to me that means finding the mental endurance to stick out your plan.
In my area of expertise, running, it is also true that the biggest skill to learn is mental endurance. As the late great Steve Prefontaine said,

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more. "

The metaphor for running as a sport isn't the sprint. It's the marathon. The challenge isn't just getting out there early, or getting out there regularly. It's staying out there through the worst of it: 40 degrees with icy wind and spitting rain, or 90 degrees zero humidity and blistering hot. You have to focus on whatever goal will get you to "keep turning them legs!"

On long runs, I usually visualize myself taking regular breaks, by picking something on the near horizon and chanting "when I get there, if I need to, I'll rest". Once I reach that point, I'm often more surprised by how good I feel - I may have a second wind, or have just pushed through the pain and started to get my rhythm. Usually, I don't need to stop - I just needed the mental pick me up to KNOW that it would be okay if I stopped there.

What program are you following? In the beginning I followed the RKC minumum from Pavel's Enter the Kettlebell. What Kettlebell training does her trainer have?
If she is using the bell quite a bit she will adjust to the weight in 3-4 weeks.

I think her kettlebell is 8 Kg, her gym trainer had her using one (major selling point for me on the gym for her). I'm looking into making a set of Clubbells out of those giant plastic baseball bats to see what they're like as well. The Youtube videos look pretty interesting.

Dan I agree. What weight is your girlfriends bell? And how long has she had it for? In my experience regardless of the size of the bell it takes about 3 weeks to get used to the weight and then it starts to feel light. Have fun and swing hard : )
